> Possible Medical Errors

Birth injuries caused by improper detection or care by the medical team can lead to medical errors that may be a contributing factor to Cerebral Palsy. The beginning of pregnancy should be properly and accurately dated. Using ultrasounds have made making this estimation more reliable. The failure to properly date the pregnancy can result in a premature or post-mature delivery, which can cause brain damage to the baby. Bacterial and viral infections can also cause damage to the fetus during pregnancy. If untreated, the infections may induce premature labor, resulting in possible brain damage from either the infection or the result of a premature birth. Infections can go unnoticed if the medical team fails to detect it.

  • A baby must always have oxygen during the birthing process. Sometimes a baby may get stuck in the birth canal or get caught in the umbilical cord. The doctor should make sure the baby can still breathe if something like this happens. Insufficient oxygen can cause a baby to have Cerebral Palsy.
  • Improper positioning of a baby during final stages of the birthing process is not uncommon. In these instances a doctor may decide to perform a C-section. Failure to do so can cause Cerebral Palsy.
  • After the membranes have broken, the doctor must deliver the baby within a 24-hour period.

Complications to the mother delivering a child that is not properly evaluated can also cause Cerebral Palsy. If the mother experiences bleeding, an extremely long labor process, or a really high blood pressure, the medical team needs to act upon the existing condition very quickly to prevent possibly causing Cerebral Palsy.

Signs to Look for After Delivering Your Baby

After delivery there are sometimes signs that can help you determine if improper medical care contributed to causing Cerebral Palsy in your baby. If your baby does not seem to breathing properly or if your baby's skin appears bluish in color, injury may have occurred during birth that caused insufficient oxygen and injury to the brain. Neonatal intensive care medicine has made large medical advances. A failure to timely diagnose, and then treat neonatal infections, is an all too common occurrence. Infections to a newborn baby can result in brain damage or even death.
